Are you planning a New Year’s get together with friends and relatives? If so, now is the time to start your party decorations and party planning. Making New Year’s crafts at home can help you personalize your holiday decor and while engaging with your creative side. Even if you’re not planning a big party, many of these crafts are simply good ways to keep kids entertained while you celebrate New Year’s eve at home.
New Year Cards
If you’re planning to have a lot of people over to your house, these cards will make the perfect invitations. If you’re not planning a big event, you can still make cards and send them out to friends and loved ones to wish them a happy 2017. There’s not one way to make cards. Blank white folded cards are available for sale in craft stores; they simply need to be decorated. Having a lot of supplies on hand to make your cards beautiful will make this project more fun and rewarding. Helpful supplies to decorate cards include:
- Stamps in an assortment of shapes (snowflakes, snow men and so on)
- Light blue, silver and white acrylic paint
- Ribbon in assorted colors like blue, black, white, silver and gray
- Archival quality decorative papers
- Paper snowflakes
Once you’ve gathered your materials, get started! We recommend making several test cards before deciding on a method or design that works for you. Use archival quality glue so the recipients can make your cards into keepsakes, if desired.
Paper Snowflake Garland
You probably already know how to make paper snowflakes, but if you don’t, here’s a useful tutorial online. Once you’ve made 10 or 12 snowflakes, decorate them with glitter or paint them with silver metallic spray paint. Attach the snowflakes together into a long string using white or light blue yarn, and hang the garland up on your walls to decorate your home. You can also hang this garland in front of your windows to remind yourself of beautiful falling snow.
Paper icicle garlands are a good activity for kids. Simply draw a series of up and down jagged icicles onto a long piece of white felt, then cut out the icicles to hang on your mantel or at the top of your windows. To go the extra step, spray the tips of the garland with adhesive and then sprinkle them with glitter. To see an example of the finished product, take a look at the video below:
Silver Fruit Platter Centerpiece
Make a gorgeous fruit centerpiece for your New Year party, or just for fun. To do this, spray artificial fruit with a metallic silver paint and give the fruit sufficient time to dry (about 24 hours). Arrange the fruit on a silver platter with white roses (real or artificial).
2017 Goals Chalkboard
Do you know what your goals and resolutions are for 2017? Then we recommend making a 2017 goals chalkboard to hang in a prominent position in your home’s entryway or kitchen. Use permanent chalk markers to write your goals neatly on the chalk board. Draw a check box at the front of every item on the list. As you complete your goals of the new year, make a check in each box. This is a motivational way to show your progress throughout the year and keep yourself on track to complete your goals.
