It's that time of year again! At Ace Pain and Unfinished Furniture, we want your house to look scary and festive. The following suggestions are some of our favorite DIY Halloween decorations for a scary Halloween party or just for scaring yourself.

Zombie Garage

If you have a garage door with real windows, this is a fun project that you can work on with your little ones.

Materials:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Wax Paper
  • Black Card Stock
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Scotch Tape

Process:

  1. Measure the dimensions of your garage windows and cut wax paper to fit inside them.
  2. Have your little ones place their hands against the black card stock and outline the hands with pencil. Have your kids position their hands so it looks like they're banging or pleading to get out of a room.
  3. Cut out the hands (have your kids help if they're old enough).
  4. Glue the silhouettes of the hands onto the wax paper.
  5. Put the wax paper up in your garage windows, secured with tape.
  6. Turn on the light in your garage. Voila!

Modeling Head Cheesecloth Ghosts

This is one of the spookiest, eeriest decorations we've seen so far: cheesecloth ghosts.

Materials:

  • Foam Modeling Head
  • Cheese Cloth
  • Paintbrush
  • Mod Podge

Process:

  1. Cover the foam modeling head with a layer of cheesecloth.
  2. Use the paintbrush to cover the cheesecloth on the modeling head with Mod Podge.
  3. Press the cheesecloth into the features of the modeling head so that the cheesecloth conforms to the shape of the modeling head. Leave long trails of cheesecloth hanging from the modeling head.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 four more times.
  5. Hang your cheesecloth ghost from a nearby tree.

Graveyard Wheelbarrow

We like this graveyard wheelbarrow lawn decoration because it's really simple to set up. Just put some dirt in your wheelbarrow, fill it willy-nilly with some bones and skulls and leave it sitting on your lawn next to the fake cemetery, if you have one.

Leg-Eating Pumpkin

Carve a scary pumpkin, with an open mouth and sharp teeth. Then, cut off a leg from an old pair of jeans and stuff the jeans with straw or newspaper to make them look filled. Put a shoe at the end of the leg, and put the leg in the sharp teeth of the pumpkin. Put a little fake blood around the mouth and on the jeans for effect.

Pumpkin Ice Cooler

The pumpkin ice cooler makes a good companion for you while you're sitting on your front stoop greeting the trick-or-treaters, and it's really easy! Simply cut a wide hole in the top of a pumpkin and carve it out. Put sodas in the pumpkin, and then fill the space with ice.
Our favorite variation on this theme is the pumpkin keg, shown in the video below:

Snake Wreath

The snake wreath is a relatively easy Halloween decoration that looks nice against a white or light-colored door.

Materials:

  • Bare Twig Wreath
  • Tarp
  • Gray Spray Paint
  • Black Rubber Snakes
  • Wire
  • Wire Trimmers

Process:

  1. Lay down the wreath on a tarp then spray paint it and leave it to dry.
  2. Lay black rubber snakes on the wreath in a manner that looks attractive to you.
  3. Attach the rubber snakes to the wreath with wire.
Happy Halloween! We hope you'll enjoy your ghoulish, spooky night with the kids. Of course, if you need some painting supplies for your DIY projects, we encourage you to stop by Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture. Bring pictures of your scary lawn!
