Turn Walls And Ceilings Into A Statement
At Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture, we frequently meet customers who strive to get creative in their home interior painting projects. If you’re looking for a new way to make the walls of your home look fresh and fun, these simple techniques can be accomplished by anyone with time, patience and the right materials.

Patterns

Painting a pattern on your wall is a good way to achieve the effect of wall paper without actually using wallpaper. Patterns can be applied to the walls in different ways, depending on the type of pattern desired.
  • Stencils. Stencils are helpful for creating intricate, repeating patterns over big spaces. Stencils are best applied to walls using thick acrylic paint that does not run easily. For an in-depth look at how to stencil your walls, take a look at our previous post on the subject. For best results, we recommend practicing on a board before actually applying the stencil to the wall.
  • Stamps. Stamps can be used to paint the same image in a repeating pattern on the wall. Stamps can be made from different materials and can even be homemade. In some cases, stamps can be used to create a faux finish, like the faux brick wall project, which can be created using sponge stamps.
  • Simple geometric designs. Simple geometric designs can be created simply by masking off geometric shapes on the walls using painter’s tape. This is an easy project for homeowners who want to achieve a checkerboard look or who want to paint their walls in repeating diamonds.

Faux Finishes

Faux finishes can be used to make the walls look like velvet, cloth, wood, marble and other attractive surfaces. Over the years, we’ve covered a variety of different methods for painting your walls and other surfaces with faux finishes.
  • Faux wood
  • Smoosh painting
  • Faux leather
We recommend applying faux finishes to small areas like accent walls and bathroom walls. Unless expertly done, the effect of a faux finish is often more dramatic and impressive when contained to small areas, contrasting against solid colors.

Strange Paints

Strange paints like metallic colors can be used in small doses to create a beautiful, stunning effect. For example, consider painting a thin gold line at chair-rail height on your dining room walls. Paint one color below the line and a different color above the line to provide visual interest.
Beautiful Murals

Beautiful Murals

Painting a beautiful scene on the wall is a good way to make a child’s bedroom more personal and more interesting. Your beautiful scene can be something as simple as a sun rising over the water. If you have a flair for the creative and are confident in your ability to paint masterfully, you can try to create something more intricate and detailed, such as a scene of a sun rising over a forest.
If you would like to paint a complex scene but feel that you don’t have enough painting ability to do so, consider projecting a cartoon image on the walls, then trace that image with paint. This is a good way to get professional looking results without actually hiring a professional artist.
