Upgrade Your Outdoor Space

Upgrade Your Outdoor Space
Spring is almost here! Now is the time to start thinking about home improvement projects that will help you upgrade your outdoor space this fall. Homeowners who want to make their outdoor space more pleasing to the eye and attractive for visitors can use the following ideas to make their home beautiful this spring.

Use Paint to Make Your Porch Pop

A fresh coat of paint can do much more than protect your home’s porch from water damage. Paint can be used to draw the eye to your front door, thus making the house seem more inviting. Homeowners hoping to sell their property this year may find this to be an especially beneficial project because boosting curb appeal can lead to a faster sale and bigger offers.
There are many different ways to add color to your porch so that it pops visually.
  • Floor: Painting the floor of your porch will hide old scuff marks and scratches. Choose a darker paint color to disguise footprints on the wood.
  • Ceiling: In the southern part of the United States, homeowners used to paint their porch ceiling “haint blue,” a light shade of blue green that was intended to ward away evil spirits. Of course, you can choose any color you want to make your porch ceiling attractive for visitors. We recommend coordinating the color of the ceiling and the floor to keep the colors unified. For example, if painting your porch floor a dark shade of green, paint your porch ceiling a shade of light green, to keep the parts of your porch unified and working together.
  • Railing: Coordinate the color of the porch railing with the porch floor, ceiling and the landscaping around your home. The color you choose may be the same color as the trim of your home, depending on the design of your house. If you’re not sure what color will look best on your railing, take home several samples from the paint store and try each one before making a decision.

Freshen Your Front Door With a New Coat of Paint

Your home’s front door is like a beacon for all visitors and guests who come to your property. Painting your front door a bright new shade of red or blue can draw attention to your house and could change the character of your property.
It’s common for homeowners to choose a color for their front door that does not match the color of the rest of the house, so feel free to go wild. Don’t forget that some colors have meanings when painted on the front door. Check out our old post on the topic to choose a color that’s right from your home.
Light the Way

Garden lighting is good for illuminating your landscaping and also good for improving your home’s property value. The right garden lighting can even help keep your home safe at night by cutting back on shady spots where possible intruders could lurk. Homeowners who don’t want to invest in hardwired garden lighting can always check out the solar options at their local home and garden center.

Mix Natural Materials

If you’re thinking about making serious upgrades to your home’s outdoor space this spring or summer, consider mixing natural materials like wood and stone to create a patio and deck area. Installation of a deck can boost your property value while also giving a strong return on investment when it’s time to sell.
