Which Paint Colors Can Accent Red Brick?

Red brick homes can be difficult to properly match with paint colors. For homeowners who aren’t artistically inclined, picking the right accent colors for the exterior of their home can be a special kind of challenge. In this post, we’ll cover some tips to help you pick the right accent colors for your brick home, and we’ll also go over a few of our favorite brick home accent color schemes.

Color Theory Brush Up

Color theory plays a big role in the process of choosing an accent color. Before we get started talking about colors that go best with red brick, there are a few things you should know about house color pairing and combining.
For starters, the best way to pick an accent color is to pair colors that have a relationship to one another on the color wheel.
  • Complimentary Colors are high-contrast color pairs that are positioned opposite from one another on the color wheel. Complimentary color pairs are dramatic and bold.
  • Analogous Colors are found side-by-side on the color wheel. These colors are similar to one another.
  • Neutrals sometimes occupy a position in the center of the color wheel and are generally considered to be black, white, gray, cream and brown. Neutrals can be safely paired with basically anything.

Other Things to Think About

So when you’re picking a color to go with your red brick, here are a few other factors that should be considered:
  1. Roof Color Is a Factor: If your roof is already a color (say, for example, green), then the accents colors you pick will need to match the roof color as well as the brick.
  2. You Can Pick More Than One Accent: Your home’s trim can be a different color from the shutters and the door. Picking more than one accent color helps to ensure that your color scheme is more complex and interesting.

Accents that Work

So, all that considered, let’s dive in and come up with some workable color combinations.
  • Cream and Sage: Sage green is the complement of brick red, while the neutral color cream helps to balance the drama of a red and green combo. This blog shows a combination of sage, brick and cream that works together very nicely.
  • Black And/Or White: You really can’t go wrong with these two colors. When combined, black and white trim on a red brick home is stately and elegant. In isolation, a straight black trim seems formal and proud, while a white trim is striking and dramatic.
  • Brown and Tan: Again, neutral color match well with red brick because they basically match everything. These earthy neutrals will help keep your brick home understated but attractive.
  • Blue-Gray: Deep blue-gray really isn’t related to red brick on the color wheel, yet both colors have an academic, intellectual quality that makes them seem somehow tied to one another. You can see these two colors in action here.
  • Red: These dark red shutters against this light red/orange brick home is the perfect example of an analogous color scheme that, while subtle, works really well with the right type of structure.
