8 Ways to Decorate Your Porch for Fall
Fall is here! Now is the time to add beautiful great autumn decor to your front stoop. We’ve collected our favorite ideas for local homeowners who want to make their front porch look its best.

Paint Your Door Mat

Doormats can start to look dingy and dirty over time. Fortunately, you can cover up a lot of the wear and tear with a fresh coat of paint. We recommend using exterior grade latex paint to dress up your doormat with expressive fall colors like red, orange, yellow and gray-brown or gray-blue. To start, clean your mat and get rid of any dirt or grit caught in the fibers. Next, paint your mat with a base color to make it look tidy and new. When this is done, use a fall-themed stencil (like an acorn or leaf shape) to make patterns on your mat.

Assemble Fall-Themed Objects

Assemble a collection of fall-themed objects on your porch to create a warm and cozy scene. Some common items that people use to decorate their front porch include:
  • Hay bales
  • Scarecrow
  • Dry corn plants and corn husks
  • Harvest-themed objects like a shovel, pitchfork or hoe
  • Wooden basket with apples

Paint Your Pumpkins

Painting your porch pumpkins is a smart way to add color to your landscaping. Many people choose to paint patterns and symbols on their pumpkins instead of faces. Can’t decide what kind of pattern or image to use? Try painting your pumpkin with chalkboard paint, then use chalk to draw a temporary image on your pumpkin. You can change the image anytime you want! We recommend using black chalkboard paint because it’s a tasteful color that only gets more appropriate as Halloween approaches.

Hang a Fall Garland

Fall garlands made from artificial or real fall leaves add a touch of color to space over your front door or your porch railing. These decorations pair well with fresh pumpkins, apples, gourds or squash.

Plant Autumn-Blooming Flowers

Autumn-blooming flowers like mums make your front porch look decorative and cheerful. We recommend planting mums in bold fall colors like deep purple, deep red, dark orange and sunny yellow.

Make Your Porch Cozy

Drape the rocker or chair on your front porch with a throw blanket, then set out a candle in an antique candle holder on the side table. This way when you spend time on your front porch, you’ll look and feel cozy even after the temperature outside drops.

Hang a Wreath

A wreath is a simple but powerful symbol of the unending wheel of time. Hang a fall wreath decorated in ribbon, wheat, gourds, acorns, pine cones and other seasonal objects to remind visitors and members of your household of the lovely season at hand.

Gather Colorful Heirloom Pumpkins

Orange pumpkins are nice, but wouldn’t you like to decorate your front porch in a variety of colors? Look for heirloom pumpkins in various colors like green, white and stripes. If possible, put one pumpkin on each step leading up to your front porch, then place a small stack of pumpkins at the top of the steps to make the space as decorative as possible.
