How to Protect Your Furniture During Holiday Parties

Holiday parties are definitely part of the magic of the season, but the cleanup is a pain—especially when furniture is involved. Prevent disasters and recover quickly with a few solid tips on how to protect your furniture during holiday parties.
Define Off-Limits Areas
You’re allowed to have a “nice,” decorative room in your home. Many of us do. Just make sure guests know that these spaces aren’t hangout areas during your party. Simply gate off the room(s) or place a sign with a gentle reminder that the area is a no-no to get your message across.
Common spaces to protect may include the dining room, study or others with valuable furniture pieces or antiques. To maximize the available party space without putting high-end accessories at risk, put those items in your off-limits areas. Consider collecting and storing guest coats and purses here so they’re safely out of the way.
Use Stain Repellent
Accidents happen. Someone spills their red wine, food drips off the plate in the worst possible place. These don’t have to be disasters.
Before party time, take time to spray couches and chair upholstery with stain repellents to minimize damage from accidental spills. Rather than setting in, stains will bead and be easier to sop up. Of course, if you’re really nervous about spills, use fabric slip covers on larger furniture pieces to protect them. All you’ll need to do is throw it in the wash later.
If accidents DO happen and these steps aren’t sufficient, don’t panic. Put a few additional party supplies on your list and make sure to have them available. Products like seltzer water and stain removing wipes can be lifesavers.
Mind Your Wood Furniture
Wood furniture is delightful, but is SO delicate. To protect wood
tables, chairs and more, take a few precautions to prevent damage.
Not only a good idea for everyday use, encourage visitors to use coasters for their beverages. Condensation from cups leaves nasty rings on wooden tables, after all. Likewise, when you set out hot dishes, be sure to put them on potholders or trivets to avoid damage from steam and heat.
Stock Up on Plates
Whether it’s a smaller gathering worthy of using your everyday china, or a big holiday bash better suited to paper plates, make sure there’s enough to go around. Your furniture and carpets will thank you for it.
If you don’t have enough plates for guests during your gathering, that’s a recipe for disaster. Too few plates for guests to use means they’ll resort to stacking appetizers on cocktail napkins. Crumbs and spills could end up everywhere.
