What Makes for Quality Wood Furniture?

There are all kinds of wooden furniture: modern, antique and everything in between. We’ve talked about style differences, but what about how it’s made and what it’s made of? Is there a large difference between the wood furniture of today and yesterday?
Original Solid Wood Furniture
Natural solid wood furniture isn’t exceptionally easy to find anymore. And that’s not completely a bad thing. While solid hardwood furniture is beautiful, functional and long lasting, many of the modern alternatives are good as well. But we’ll always have a passion for solid wood.
You can find wood furniture made of soft wood like redwood, pine, cedar and fur. It can be of good quality and beautiful, but requires more care to stay that way. Soft wood tends to scratch and dent easier. Hard woods such as maple, walnut, oak, mahogany and cherry are also beautiful and more resilient.
All of these woods have to be cut of course, into usable size and shapes and then transported to the place where they will be turned into furniture. All the wood will have to be air dried and then kiln dried to make sure all the moisture is removed before it’s formed into furniture.
What’s Modern Wood Furniture if not Solid Wood?
Well friends, there are many words for and many different kinds of that. You have plywood, engineered wood, composite wood, veneered wood and more. What do all these mean, is it still “real” wood? And which is better? Well, that last question is up to the asker of course, but we can tell you a little bit about it.
Engineered/composite wood is created. It does have wood in it and it is often made to look like natural wood. It is typically made of sawdust, glues and wood fibers. Plywood and veneer wood are more based on actual wood strips. It presses several thin layers of wood together, sometimes with other materials, and glues them.
Much of the wooden furniture you find in stores today will be of this variety. It’s easier to mass produce and often cheaper to manufacture. While you may initially want to look down on these products they can be attractive, long lasting and sturdy. It’s up to you what is best for your home.
