Caring for Wooden Furniture
Well built wooden furniture is timeless and can easily become heirlooms you pass down from generation to generation. Making sure your wooden furniture stands the test of time requires a little TLC and elbow grease. Here are few tips for caring for your wooden furniture.

Keep Cleaning Simple

When it comes to cleaning your wooden furniture, you don’t need to involve a lot of chemicals or expensive cleaning products. All you really need is a good duster, some soap, and water. The first step is to gently dusty your furniture, making sure to get in all the various nooks and crannies. Once, you’ve dusted your piece thoroughly, it’s time to get to cleaning.
wUse a soft cloth soaked in soapy water to wipe the surface area of your furniture. Believe it or not, the water won’t hurt your furniture, as long as you don’t soak it. If you really want to be thorough, consider using a toothbrush to get into the corners and other hard-to-reach areas. Once you’ve washed your furniture, gently dry it off with a soft towel with special care not to scratch it.

Stay Away from the Heat

Wood can be very temperamental and fluctuations between temperatures can cause it to warp or buckle over time. This is especially true in damp or humid weather. Another way to avoid damage is by keeping wooden furniture away from radiators or heating vents. Dry heat can cause wood to crack. It may even be a good idea to use a humidifier throughout the winter.
Likewise, it’s a good idea to keep wooden furniture out of direct sunlight. When the sun comes in through your windows, it can become so hot that the wood’s finish literally melts. On top of that, prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading and discoloration.

Consult an Expert Before Restoring

As furniture ages, it takes on an antique look. Whether this is through everyday use or just natural aging, your wooden furniture may begin to look a little less than perfect. However, when it comes to restoring old furniture, you don’t want to ruin it by overdoing things. Repainting or re-staining are straightforward enough, but even this can leave your furniture looking less than ideal.
Consider visiting your local furniture store for tips and tricks before attempting a furniture restoration. Stores like ours have experts on hand to answer any questions and point you in the right direction.
