Everything You Need to Know About Painting Your Garage

Painting your garage will not only add value to your home, but it will also make it feel more like a part of your home rather than something that is just attached to it. And if you’re selling your home, it’s an inexpensive and thoughtful way to spruce up what is normally a dull and dusty area.
Choosing Your Paint
You’ll need to choose a paint for your garage walls. We recommend that you use a good interior latex paint, such as Benjamin Moore’s SCUFF-X, as it will not outgas dangerous fumes that exterior paints might.
Stay away from flat paint as it looks awful when it becomes dirty. Instead, we recommend that you choose eggshell, semi-gloss, matte, or satin paints, and be sure to choose a lighter color for the walls as it will make your garage look brighter and cleaner.
Preparing Your Surfaces
In most cases, you’ll need to clean all the surfaces first. Don’t use a pressure washer on the walls as it can damage the drywall. Instead, wash your walls with Dawn dishwashing soap to get rid of any grease. If your drywall is unfinished, you will have to first finish it. Whether it is finished, already painted, or brand new, it’s a good idea to use a primer. Your choice of primer may depend on whether there is oil based paint or other types of paint on your wall. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff can help you choose the right primer for your situation.
Painting Your Walls
If you have an airless sprayer, use it to paint your walls and ceiling. If you need an airless sprayer, we can help you with that as well. Sure, you can also use a traditional paint roller, but it will take more time. Be sure to use masking tape and plastic over any areas you don’t want paint on. That includes light switches, fixtures, and yes, even the floor. If you first use primer, be sure it dries before painting with whatever color you’ve chosen.
