The holidays are just around the corner! Now is the time to get ready for your holiday guests. Cleaning, decorating and fixing up your home are important components of holiday planning and preparations.

Clean, Clean, Clean

Before your guests arrive, perform a deep cleaning of sometimes overlooked parts of your house in addition to your normal cleaning duties. Above-and-beyond cleaning will make your house sparkle.
  • Spot treat your carpet. This is especially important in more public parts of your house, like your living room, dining room, and walkways
  • Organize your pantry and clean out your refrigerator. Cleaning out your kitchen storage will make food preparation and cleanup easier.
  • Wash your windows. Make them sparkle so that your guests can watch the snow fall outside!
  • Dust and vacuum the guest room thoroughly. This will certainly make your guests’ stay more comfortable.

Make Small Home Improvements

To go the extra mile and make your home as impressive and beautiful as possible for your guests, make small home improvements that you’ve been putting off all year.
  • Repaint or use touch-up paint in rooms with scuffs on the walls.
  • Fix broken door knobs.
  • Replace burnt out light bulbs.
  • Repair any broken or jammed doors.

Decorate Your Interior and Exterior

Interior and exterior decorations are very important for putting people in the holiday spirit. If you don’t have the time to put up holiday lights outside, installing yard projector decorations takes only a few minutes and can dramatically bathe your house in glowing lights that can be seen for blocks.
To welcome your guests as they arrive, put a wreath on your door, and if possible, put up colorful garland wrapped in Christmas lights on your mantel, around your stair railing, or draped over the tops your kitchen cabinets. These little touches can make your home more festive, warm and inviting.

Make the Outside Safe For Guests

Safety is always a priority. Ensure their safety from falling on ice or slipping on a snow-covered staircase.
  • Shovel snow immediately as it begins to fall.
  • De-ice your walkways regularly throughout the season.
  • Using a timer, turn on your exterior Christmas lights to ensure that there is light enough for your guests to see even after the sun goes down.
  • Tape down, or cover, cords from Christmas lights to prevent guests from tripping over them.

Perform Deck Maintenance

Deck maintenance is equally important at this time of year. Clearing off the snow and sealing the wood against the elements can help protect the deck, while also preventing the wood from deteriorating.
You won’t want to worry about this chore when Christmas rolls around, so finish up your deck maintenance now. While you’re at it, decorate your deck with Christmas lights to give your guests a place to escape for a few minutes while the holiday parties are happening.

Get Scented Things

Scented candles and potpourri will make your home smell fresh, clean and Christmas-y. Putting something scented in every room will make your home a little more cozy for your guests.
