Halloween Decoration Tips That Won’t Ruin Your Paint Job
As the chill returns to the air, so too does the Halloween season. Before you know it, it’s time to don your spookiest costume and hand out fun-sized candy to the neighborhood kids. But what’s Halloween without the traditional decorations? As fun as they are, they can too often lead to permanent damage around the house, especially to your nicely painted walls. Talk about scary!
Try some of these paint-friendly solutions as you prepare for the season and ease your worries about taking down your decorations on November 1st.

Skip the Harmful Tape and Thumbtacks

Whether you’re into ghosts and ghouls, or broomsticks and bats, creating a festive atmosphere around the house often includes hanging things up around the house. While it might be tempting to grab that roll of masking tape from the junk drawer, you’ll be in for a real fright when you go to remove it. Just imagine your beautifully painted room scarred by missing patches.
When purchasing your decorations, look for tape that is expressly safe for walls. Many tape manufacturers carry product lines designed for this very purpose. If you’re hanging something a little heavier, it might be wise to go with mounting putty or Command™ strips.

Opt for Battery-Powered Candles

An electronic candle in your jack-o’-lantern will always be safer than a real flame. However, there’s another added benefit that won’t have your walls shrieking in terror. Regular candle burners probably know that soot stains on the wall or ceiling are not only unsightly, but not a lot of fun to get rid of.
However, if you do prefer traditional flame candles, make sure they’re adequately covered at all times. Open flames will leave more smoke and soot marks. When you’re ready to extinguish, make sure to snuff them out completely and cover the wick. Letting the smoke rise is how much of the soot finds its way to your walls.

Keep an Eye on Your Costumes

Dressing up in spooky and kooky costumes is easily one of the best parts about Halloween for kids of all ages. However, bulky or awkward costumes tend to warp the sense of space, making it easy to go bumping into walls, leaving nasty streaks or dings. This goes for all of those cheap plastic accessories, too. While old, run-down, haunted houses are fun for the season, you don’t want to live in one all year long.
Try putting your younger kids’ costumes on by the front door, limiting your exposure to the rest of the house. \In fact, , wait until it’s almost time to leave for trick-or-treating before getting your younger ones ready. This way, they’re not running all around the house, leaving nasty scuffs with their pirate swords or fairy wands.
