How to Choose the Right Paint to Waterproof
Sam Lutz • July 3, 2018
You finally did it. You decided to finish your basement. What’s the one thing that can ruin a finished basement? Water. Actually, water can ruin pretty much any basement. If you dread a forecast of seven straight days of rain, or if you are tired of lugging the shop-vac down the stairs every time it rains, then this blog is for you. You shouldn’t have to deal with water in your basement. Keeping water out of your basement can be as simple as using the right paint to waterproof your space.
How do I waterproof my basement?
There are numerous things you need to do before even thinking about purchasing a waterproof paint.
The first step is to test your walls to see where the leaks are. If you cover your wall with some clear plastic, come back in a few weeks and see an area that is wet, you’ve pretty much found an area that needs some quick TLC.
Next, go through and use concrete patching compound to seal those cracks and prevent more water from coming in.
Also, check the outside of your home. If you’re really serious about waterproofing, it doesn’t hurt to install a backup sump pump as well.
Once you’re done with all of that, then you can buy some waterproof paint, such as Dry Lock from UGl or Waterblock from Benjamin Moore. After that, you can pick any color you’d like for the finish coat and paint it like you would any other room!
Sounds simple enough, right? It’s a small price to pay to keeping your basement dry. Just one day of prep, one day of work, and you won’t have to worry about dodging puddles in your basement again!
