How To Remove Paint From Your Carpet
Sam Lutz • March 29, 2016

It’s a homeowner’s nightmare scenario: you painted your living room this weekend and have now gotten paint on your brand new carpet. Knowing what to do can make all the difference. Whether the paint is fresh or dried, we’ll walk you step-by-step through the process of removing the paint and hopefully saving your carpet.
Wet Paint Removal (Small Smudges Only)
For small brush strokes and smudges on carpet, you should be able to remove the stain if you act quickly and have the proper supplies. For this process you’ll need a solvent like isopropyl alcohol or nail polish remover and a few clean rags. Wet the rags with the solvent (don’t put the solvent directly on the carpet!), then use the rag to dab at the paint. Start at the perimeter of the paint stain and move your way in as the solvent on the rag lifts the paint from the carpet. Keep doing this until the rag is no longer soaking up any pigment from the carpet.
If a stain is still visible on the carpet, mix bleach-free, lanolin-free dishwashing detergent with warm water, and continue to blot the stain with the solution. Continue to do this until the rag no longer picks up pigment from the carpet. If there’s still a visible stain on the carpet fibers, dab the pile with hydrogen peroxide to remove the last of the paint.
Wet Paint Removal (Big Stains)
If you happen to spill an entire bucket of paint on your carpet, the process for removing the paint will be very different. Your instructions are as follows:
- Scoop up the excess paint with a spoon or a ladle.
- Dampen a towel and lay the towel over the remaining paint stain.
- Call a carpet cleaning company.
This solution may not be DIY, but the best way to ensure that your carpet will be able to return to normal is to call in a professional. To see a recording showing how a professional carpet cleaning company can remove the stain from your carpet, take a look at the YouTube video below:
Dry Paint Removal
In the event that the paint is allowed to dry on your carpet before the stain is discovered, follow this procedure:
- Use a knife or a spoon to scrape off any large chunks of dried paint.
- Mix a solution of hot water and dishwashing detergent.
- Soak the carpet with the hot water solution. Allow the solution to sit on the stain and soften the paint.
- Scrape the stain with a knife or spoon.
- Repeat steps 3 through 4 again and again until the stain has been removed.
