New Year, New Home Improvements
Around the new year, it’s common for people to make resolutions to improve their homes. At Ace Paint and Unfinished Furniture, we help homeowners make these improvements.

Get Organized

Clutter can make it difficult to keep your home clean and beautiful. Eliminating clutter can help you keep your house pleasant, attractive and healthy for other members of your household.
Clutter can take many forms, and thus can be eliminated through a variety of methods. Some of the best ways to eliminate clutter:
  • Have a garage sale to sell those things you no longer need and want.
  • Purchase modular storage for your home’s closets, garage and shed.
  • Sort through everything currently being stored to decide what stays and what goes.
  • Resolve to throw away or shred junk mail on a nightly, weekly or bi-weekly basis.
  • Go through your closets and storage areas; take unneeded items to local charities and non-profits.
Keeping your house free of clutter will make it look tidier and may even make it look larger inside as well! Decluttering can be a year-long process, so get started as soon as possible.

Improve Safety

Safety is critical to maintaining good quality of life in your home. There are many ways to make your home safer for the people in your family:
  • Check the batteries in your smoke detectors on a regular basis.
  • Install motion-sensor lights outside.
  • Put your interior lights on timers.
  • Maintain your doors and fix broken doors or locks right away.
  • Keep toxic cleaning products out of reach of children and pets.
  • Pick up your mail and newspapers daily.
  • Use non-slip floor mats in your bathroom and in wet parts of the kitchen.
Following these tips can help you and other members of your family stay safe.

Repaint

Repainting your home is a great way to redecorate. Repainting is also an effective way to tie together decorating schemes that may have become disparate over the years. We recommend using Low VOC paint to maintain good indoor air quality. When choosing a color to paint your home, these tips can help:
  • Paint samples on the wall before choosing a final color.
  • Larger rooms tend to look best with medium to dark colors, while smaller rooms tend to look best with light to medium colors.
  • If you plan to sell your home in the near future, neutral colors are more buyer-friendly.
  • Shiny paints that bounce light around the space work well in dark rooms.
