Painting a Nursery and Child’s Room
Preparing a nursery is one of the many things that parents do when they’re expecting a baby. Choosing the right colors and the right paints for a nursery can help ensure that the project is a success. In this post, we’ll discuss the best colors for a beautiful nursery and the best type of paint to use on the walls and furniture.

Choose the Right Colors

Choosing the right colors for your baby’s nursery is important. Many new parents are tempted to choose playful, childish colors for their baby’s room. Don’t forget that your baby will soon grow up into an older child who may not appreciate a room painted in a bright, bold, baby-like color scheme. If you don’t wish to repaint your child’s room in a few short years, choose colors that your child can appreciate now and as an older child.
  • Neutrals. Neutrals like brown and gray are mellow, relaxing and appropriate from infancy through school age. Best of all, neutrals go with everything, so you won’t have to worry about choosing the right furniture to match the walls.
  • Soft blue. Baby blue isn’t just for boys! This gentle color is soothing and soft, just the right shade to help your child fall asleep at nap time.
  • Green. Parents looking for something less gender specific may appreciate the color green on their child’s walls. Like blue, green is soothing and sweet, but earthy as well. This color is perfect for boys or girls.

Go Low VOC

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. VOCs are emitted as gases, and can be found in relatively high concentrations inside the home. VOCs are believed to have short- and long-term health effects, so many people do what they can to reduce concentration of VOCs in their homes. Paint is one of the most common sources of VOCs. Low VOC paint products are the best type of paints to use in nurseries.

Paint Furniture the Right Way

Baby furniture will be chewed on and well worn by the time your baby is grown. When choosing paint for furniture, we recommend using non-toxic, low VOC paints. The hardiest, most sturdy paints will be those paints labeled specifically for use on furniture. These paints have been designed to stand up to hard use, and are less likely to chip when your baby tries to sooth his or her aching gums by chewing on the crib.
When painting furniture, remember a few basic rules:
  • Clean the piece. Use a rag to clean the furniture and remove dust, dirt and grit that may be on the wood.
  • Prime the wood. Painting the wood with primer will help the paint stick to the furniture, resulting in a better looking finished product.
  • Paint the primed furniture. Apply a thin coat of paint and allow the paint to dry. The paint is fully dry when the paint is no longer tacky.
  • Apply a second coat. Apply a second coat of paint to the wood when the first coat has dried. Apply more layers as necessary, until the furniture has been completely coated.
