Thanksgiving Craft Projects

One of the best ways to get your family into the spirit of Thanksgiving is to make craft projects together. Below are some of the best craft projects to work on with your children before the holiday. All the crafts mentioned below can be done with children ages 6 to 12, but older children can also enjoy working on these projects. Younger children are also able to participate in these craft activities if they are provided enough support from adults.
Pinch Pot Turkey
Materials:
- Oven-bake clay
- Shiny acrylic paint
- Paint brushes
- Palette
- Jar of water (for rinsing brushes)
A pinch pot is one of the most basic type of three dimensional crafts. To make a pinch pot, roll a piece of clay into a ball. Insert your thumb into the ball to make a deep impression in the clay, but do not allow your thumb to pierce through the clay and make a hole in the ball. With your thumb in the ball, grip the clay with your fingers and pinch the clay. Rotate the ball on your thumb, then grip the ball and pinch it with your thumb and fingers. Continue rotating the ball and pinching the sides until the ball starts to form a very basic pot. You can see the process here:
Next, use the extra clay to form a turkey head and a turkey tail. Attach the head to the front of the pot and the tail to the back of the pot so. Bake the pot following the instructions provided with the clay. Once the pot has baked, paint the pot with shiny acrylic paint. Turkey pinch pots
make good candle or candy holders at the Thanksgiving table.
Turkey Hand Print
Materials:
- Construction paper
- Tempera paint
- Paint brush
- Palette
- Jar of water
This classic Thanksgiving art project makes beautiful art that you can hang on the walls of your dining room at Thanksgiving! Paint your hand so that the palm and thumb is brown and the fingers are all different colors. Press your hand into the construction paper so that you leave a multicolored hand print on the page. The palm and thumb represent the body and head of the turkey, and the fingers represent the tail. Next, use the paintbrush to paint an eye, beak and waddle on the turkey. Give the paint time to dry before hanging the pictures.
Glitter Leaves
Materials:
- Leaves
- Hole puncher
- Ribbon
- Spray adhesive
- Glitter
Collect fall leaves outside. The leaves you choose should not be brittle and dry, but bendable and supple. Next, use the hole puncher to punch a hole in each leaf near the base. Spray each leaf with spray adhesive, then dip each leaf in glitter so that the glitter sticks to the surface of the leaf. String a piece of ribbon through the hole in each leaf, then tie each piece of ribbon into a loop. Use these decorative leaves
as ornaments around your Thanksgiving table.
