Update Your Grown Child's Bedroom: Part 1
Sam Lutz • August 26, 2019

Your son or daughter has left the nest to attend college, leaving an unoccupied space in your home with plenty of creative potential. What do you want to do with the bedroom? Why not create a guest room or add a home office? Transform your space with elements of color, updated decor and new furniture.
Convert the Room with Color
When kids grow up, a playfully-themed bedroom no longer suits them, much less you. Naturally, when you’re brainstorming how to repurpose the space into a guest room or office, color is top-of-mind. Luckily, you don’t have to go too crazy with the paint job.
Guest Room and Office Paint
When repurposing a bedroom to become a guest room or office, less is more. Cool or neutral colors are calm and relaxing for your guests. White, beige and earthy greens are mild choices and have the benefit of matching with most decor. Cool hues like blues and grays are safe choices, too, because these colors are clean and calm.
Revisit Decor and Furniture
Pop singer posters and trophies aren’t going to complement the new vibe of the room, so take it up a notch. While you’re at it, bid farewell to the trusty twin bed and nightstand, too. Try to match the new purpose of the room with any decor choices so the space remains inviting. This goes for any artwork, window hangings and furniture. The idea is to introduce more mature design elements to the room.
Wall Art
Sure, posters are the hallmark of childhood and adolescence, but there comes a time to ditch these taped pictures for more sophisticated decor choices. To keep a nod to your child’s younger years alive in the space, consider framing a favorite photo or award and displaying it tastefully. Of course, another tried-and-true option is to hang a wall mirror and/or a few art prints to bring in some flair.
Queen Bed
Lots of kids had twin beds growing up, because they’re just the right size and are space efficient, providing plenty of room for toys and indoor play. This is one of the first things to ditch when the room becomes a guest room, because adult guests are simply too big for them! Coincidentally, adults often visit as couples, so at least a queen bed is an ideal upgrade for a comfortable stay. Of course, if the room is small, a foldout sofa bed will provide enough room to move around and a sufficient sleeping space at night.
Table or Desk + Extra Storage
A table or desk would be a huge productivity boost in the new space if it will become an office. So many people work from home regularly now that an office is almost a necessity. A designated workspace provides a way to settle in and be productive, plus you can hook up WiFi nearby to accommodate internet needs.
Round out the office vibe with storage solutions to match. Filing cabinets are compact enough to both remain out of the way and store essential documents in the room, and may be placed against walls or under tables. Additionally, sleek bookshelves provide plenty of room for reference materials, as well as family favorite books if the room will be better served as a combination office/library.
