How to Decorate Your Deck for Spring
Sam Lutz • April 4, 2017
Spring is here! It’s time to decorate your deck. If you’re a homeowner in Pittsburgh, you may have been thinking about your deck decorating strategies for a long time coming. Knowing where to start, what makes a deck attractive and how to make your deck comfortable in the process can help you turn your deck into the luxury space you’ve been fantasizing about for months.
Begin with the Basics
Before you can decorate your deck, you’ll need to get it ready for a long spring and summer of regular use. Your deck will need to be cleaned and possibly restained or repainted. This is a subject we’ve covered extensively in the past. If you’re not sure how to do this, check out this post that covers subjects like repairing and waterproofing your deck.
Unify with Color
Pick two or three colors for painting and decorating your deck. You can paint the furniture and accessories on the deck, or the deck itself. Limiting your color scheme to two or three hues will help bring unity to the space. If you’re not sure which colors will be best for your deck, consider the colors found in the landscape and the color of your house. Use colors found around the deck to help it seem more natural in the space where the deck is located.
Make a Living Wall
Attach a lattice up one wall of your deck, then grow long, trailing plants on the lattice. If you’re looking for an easy plant to grow, try morning glories. If possible, place the lattice on a side of the deck where it will cast shade on the chairs and benches. This helps keep the deck cool on the warmest days of summer.
Pillows, Pillows Everywhere
Pillows remind people of comfort. Placing pillows on all the chairs and benches of your deck will add visual interest while also making your deck look like a fun spot to relax. Choose pillows that match the color scheme of your deck to help tie together your decorating scheme. Remember to use pillows designed for outdoor use, and spray each one with a protective finish that will keep the material water resistant.
Pull it Together with Potted Plants
Your deck will be mostly done at this point, but adding potted plants can help fill empty spaces and bare surfaces. Flowering plants are nice but need to be deadheaded regularly. To keep your deck low maintenance, use non-flowering plants. Trailing or creeping plants like ivy can be especially charming on a deck, if allowed to wrap around the railing.
Personalize With Paint
Use paint to color the potted plants and a few pieces of furniture on your deck. Paint can be used to stencil patterns or to simply add more color to your deck space. This helps bring together your design and adds more unity to your overall color scheme.
