Spooky Porch Decorating Ideas for Halloween

Halloween is here! How spooky does your front porch look? These tips will certainly help you get into the Halloween spirit and ensure that your home is ready for trick-or-treaters tonight!
Murder Scene
Turn your home into a whodunit style murder scene, complete with chalk outline and blood on the porch! To keep things lighthearted and safe, keep your porch well-lit and play some fun Halloween party music in the background (think: Monster Mash).
Enter the Witch’s Lair
Witches are spooky and fun at this time of year. Set a cauldron out on your porch and fill it with witch accessories like a broomstick, antique bottles of potions and a stuffed black cat. Drape your front porch with gauzy, loose fabric, then light your porch with a subtle green glow and strings of white twinkle lights. Tonight, play a soundtrack of witches cackling, wolves howling and wind whipping through the trees.
Pumpkins Galore
Nothing says fall like a collection of friendly-looking pumpkins. If you set out your pumpkins weeks in advance, decorate them with paint instead of carving them open. For a traditional Halloween color scheme, paint your pumpkins in black and white. For a more tasteful collection, paint your pumpkins in cream, black and gold. When arranging your stack of pumpkins, elevate the ones at the back with an overturned harvest basket. Use other seasonal decorations like dried corn stalks or a scarecrow to help set the scene.
Spooky, Scary Ghost
Make a chicken wire and cheesecloth ghost
for your front porch, then light the scene with black light. Use artificial flickering candles placed on either side of your doorway to give your visitors a way to see, and light the path leading to your front door with twinkling strings of Halloween colored lights. When choosing a soundtrack for your front porch on Halloween night, witch cackling sounds, spooky whining groans and wolves howling are appropriate.
Tips For A Spooky And Fun Front Porch
When decorating your front porch, keep these tips in mind:
- Keep your audience in mind. Children at different ages will have different expectations for the holiday. Older children tolerate much scarier decorations than younger children. Younger kids like their decorations light-hearted and sweet. Try to find a happy medium if you’re expecting a mixture of ages.
- Keep it safe. Accidents happen when the porch is too dark and when obstructions block the path. Take care to ensure your front porch is well-lit and the path to your door is clear.
- Don’t forget the rain. If it rains on Halloween night, will your decorations hold up? Have a contingency plan in mind for the big night.
- Watch for signs of electrical overload. If you’ve plugged in a lot of string lights into one outlet, you could overload the circuit. Watch for sparks and feel the outlet plate for warmth; these are both signs that you have too many lights plugged into one source.
