The 7 Apps You Need for Interior Design
Sam Lutz • February 17, 2015

There’s an app for everything, they say—including an app to help you paint and decorate your home. Actually, there are quite a few apps that focus on interior design, paint color selection and related topics. Here we’ve listed our favorite interior design apps, to help you choose the best for your home improvement projects.
Color Capture
- Price: Free
The Benjamin Moore Color Capture app for Android and iPhone allows users to browse through paint samples from Benjamin Moore, make groups of favorite colors, add notes and pictures. This is a handy app for anyone redecorating or moving in the near future.
Houzz Interior Design Ideas
- Price: Free
The Houzz Interior Design Ideas app is designed for interior designers and home improvement buffs looking for inspiration and ideas. The app allows you to find and share ideas, create a virtual ideabook, seek advice from the online community, search for interior designers and architects, shop for accessories and furniture, and more.

Mark On Call
- Price: $2.99
This powerful little app allows you to design spaces and plan the interior layout of existing spaces. In addition to making blueprints and designing furniture layouts, Mark On Call allows you to populate those spaces with colors and patterns, so you can get an idea for how everything will look when it’s all said and done.
Evernote
- Price: Free
Evernote is a fabulous way to collect all your musings and reminders into one powerful app. Evernote allows you to categorize your notes so that they’re easy to store and easy to pull up again. And of course, when you sync all your notes from Penultimate with Evernote, these two apps become even more useful.

Home3D
- Price: $5.99
The Home3D app
allows users to create 3-dimensional layouts of their home, complete with furniture, framed pictures, countertops, doorways and more. Home3D is helpful when you’re standing in a home improvement store trying to pick out a paint color, or shopping for furniture and trying to decide if the dimensions of a table will be too big or small. Home3D allows you to make on-the-spot decisions about the best accessories and paint colors for your home.
Penultimate
- Price: Free
Penultimate
isn’t actually an interior design app, it’s a digital handwriting/note-taking app that allows you to write notes and store them and sync them with Evernote
(you can see our thoughts on Evernote below). Penultimate still works for planning interior designs because it allows you to sketch your thoughts, import pictures and take notes–all on the go. As long as you have your iPad on hand, you’ve always got your interior design thoughts and sketches with you.
- Price: Free
Again, Pinterest
isn’t an interior design app—but it sure is handy for interior design purposes. Use the Pinterest app to collect all your favorite images and ideas on the web, and share them over social media so you can get feedback from friends.

One of the wonderful things about good wood furniture is that it doesn’t have to be merely functional. It can be beautiful as well. We’ve seen some amazing pieces made with wood stains that are more than just furniture, they’re works of art. So if you’ve got an old table, desk or other piece of wood furniture that needs jazzed up, why don’t you consider using some of our great stains to try one of these ideas.
